Pathologies and causes of death in stranded cetaceans in the Canary Islands (2013-2018)

Cetacean pathology is a cornerstone for population and marine ecosystem health monitoring, allowing clear differentiation among natural and anthropogenic threats. Previous studies in the Canary Islands reported natural causes of death in 59.4% (1999-2005) and 81% (2006-2012) of stranded cetaceans, versus anthropogenic causes in 33.3% and 19%, respectively. This study aimed to determine the causes of death (CD), pathologic findings, and epidemiological patterns of 316 cetaceans stranded in the Canary Islands between 2013 and 2018. The CDs were classified in pathologic entities (PEs) emphasizing natural versus anthropic origins. Of 316 animals, 224 (70.9%) from 18 species were suitable for pathological investigations. Among natural PEE, natural pathology associated with good nutritional status (NP-GNS) and natural pathology associated with significant loss of nutritional status (NP-LNS) represented 43/224 (19.2%) and 36/224 (16%) cases, respectively. Natural pathology with undetermined nutritional status (NP-UNS) occurred in 19/224 (8.5%) animals. Intra- and interspecific traumatic interactions (ITI) represented 30/224 (13.4%) cases, followed by neonatal/perinatal pathology (NPN) 19/224 (8.5%) and live-stranding stress and/or capture myopathy (LS-CM) 18/224 (8%). Infectious and parasitic diseases predominated in natural PEs. Anthropogenic PEs included interaction with fishing activities (IFA) in 17/224 (7.6%) cases, vessel collisions (VC) in 9/22 (4%) cases, and foreign body-associated pathology (FBAP) in 3/224 (1.3%) animals. Overall, anthropogenic causes accounted for 12.9% of deaths, natural causes for 73.6%, and the CD could not be established in 30/194 (13.4%) cases. This study reaffirms the trends concerning recognized PEs (NP-GNS, NP-LNS, NP-UNS, ITI, NPN, LS-CM, IFA, VC, and FBAP), expands the body of knowledge on cetacean pathology in the Canary Islands, and reports novel findings including mixed infections, clostridiosis in uncommon species, uremic syndrome secondary to urethral nematodiasis, gas embolism in unusual species, epibiont stomatitis, congenital musculo-skeletal malformations, or neoplastic processes. These findings advance understanding of cetacean mortality patterns and support conservation and management strategies.

Introducing cognitive enrichment from an early age has the potential to enhance an animals capacity to learn both simple and complex tasks, promote neural plasticity, and support cognitive development. This is applicable for young cattle who are at a critical stage in their development and could benefit from the influence cognitive enrichment has on their behavioral expression. This study aims to explore the effects cognitive enrichment has on weaned dairy calves through analyzing behavioral measures of voluntary participation and short-term behavioral reactions to enrichment exposure. Our study involved a total of five pairs of weaned calves (n=8 treatment; n=2 control). The treatment groups were presented with three variations of a puzzle box, each equipped with unique challenges that offer different solutions (push, slide, pull). These boxes were provided to the calves twice daily over the span of nine days in an isolated corridor located behind their pen. We hypothesized that motivated calves would consistently engage with cognitive enrichment voluntarily over time and express directed natural behaviors, reflecting sustained participation across repeated trials. Results demonstrated that calves consistently visited the cognitive enrichment area across trials, with an average latency of 75.7 {+/-} 47.0s from the pen to the enrichment. Secondly, the calves spent a significant proportion of trial time within the enrichment area at 65% (870.1 {+/-} 21s). Lastly, all calves expressed a broad range of behaviors in line with their natural exploration within the enrichment area, while the puzzle box treatment groups expressed higher durations of behavioral expressions when compared to the control (F=11.7, p<0.0001). Combined, these results indicate the calves motivations to voluntarily participate in a cognitive challenge. While these are promising findings for cognitive enrichment and its applicability to dairy calves, further work is needed to understand broader parameters. Specifically, how can social dynamics influence enrichment interaction in groups, how can this type of enrichment be implemented on farms, and what are the long-term effects to providing cognitive enrichment in the early stages of development.

Restlessness is a symptom of chronic boredom in humans and a behavioural phenomenon anecdotally described as a concern in bulls raised for fattening purposes, but it has so far not been addressed in research. The two studies presented in this paper aimed to gain first insights into restlessness in bulls. We operationally defined restlessness by the number of transitions between behaviours in a given time period, and quantified restlessness in bulls of different weight classes (300, 400, 500 kg) on farms keeping bulls on fully-slatted floors (n=8, Study 1) as well as across three different husbandry systems (fully-slatted floor (FS, n=4), straw-based (SB, n=4) and organic pasture (OP, n=3), Study 2). All farms were visited twice, and the behaviour of different individuals was continuously recorded for 15 minutes each between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (Study 1) and for 8 minutes each between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. (Study 2). The effects of weight class and husbandry system were analysed using generalised linear mixed-effects models, and we ran a sequence analysis to cluster observations by the sequence, frequency, and duration of bulls behaviours in Study 1. Bulls kept in fully-slatted floor systems in Study 1 changed their behaviour on average 48.3 times per 10 minutes, with high variability both within and across farms. Weight class did not have a statistically supported effect on the number of transitions, and the sequence analysis revealed four clusters that differed in sequence and in the number of transitions. In Study 2, OP bulls showed fewer transitions than SB and FS bulls (X22 = 23.6, p < 0.001), while SB and FS bulls did not differ. While SB pens were more structured and offered more space per animal, both SB and FS systems can be characterised by monotony, which may explain the similar level of restlessness in both systems. Alternatively, or in addition, the high feeding intensity in SB and FS systems may have caused the higher number of transitions compared to the OP system, potentially elicited by subacute ruminal acidosis and/or laminitis and the resulting pain. However, these explanations are speculative and require systematic disentanglement in future studies. This study provides initial insights into restlessness in bulls and lays the groundwork for future research to identify the causes underlying restlessness and investigate its association with bull welfare.

As global reptile populations continue to decline, improving reproductive success in managed populations of listed species, such as Phrynosoma cornutum (the Texas horned lizard) has become increasingly critical for species survival. One understudied area of reproductive research in reptile species is gamete collection and storage, a crucial component for maintaining genetic diversity. In Texas, semen was collected from wild P. cornutum (n = 20) in June 2025. Semen collection was performed via electroejaculation (EEJ) under alfaxalone anesthesia. Prior to semen collection, snout-vent-lengths (SVL) and weights were recorded and testes measurements were taken using a portable ultrasound. Average sperm motility and concentration across all lizards was 83.7% and 85.7 x 106 sperm/mL, respectively. While lizards with longer SVLs had higher sperm motility, weight and testis size did not affect sperm parameters. Samples were extended in INRA96 and divided for use in cold-storage longevity or cryopreservation trials. Samples under cold-storage conditions were assessed for motility daily for 10 days. Motility was not significantly reduced until 48 hours post-collection and maintained 19% motility at day 10. For cryopreservation, samples were diluted 1:1 in INRAFreeze cryopreservation media and frozen in liquid nitrogen, then immediately thawed. Average post-thaw sperm motility was 13.9%, with the highest post-thaw motility recorded at 38.2%. This is the first report of semen storage and cryopreservation in Phrynosoma and provides valuable insight into semen storage potential in reptile species.

The measurement of inbreeding has gained significance across diverse fields, including population and conservation genetics, agricultural genetics, breeding programs for animals and plants, and wildlife management. This is due to the fact that inbreeding leads to increased homozygosity and results in lower genetic diversity, rendering populations more vulnerable to environmental changes, diseases, and other stressors. High or mid-coverage whole genome sequencing (WGS) has been widely used for inbreeding estimation, but it is resource-intensive. We aimed to investigate the use of ultra low-coverage whole genome sequencing (ulcWGS) as a cost-effective alternative for inbreeding analysis. Domestic dogs were used for our study as their extensive breeding histories lead to populations with a wide range of inbreeding levels. We constructed a multi-breed reference panel from high-coverage WGS samples. Inbreeding in independent ulcWGS samples was then estimated using runs of homozygosity (RoH) and inbreeding coefficients (F). We modeled the relationship between these measures and sequencing depth using nonlinear regression, to generate inbreeding estimates relative to sequencing depth. Resulting relative RoH and F measurements were significantly correlated, with purebred dogs exhibiting more runs of homozygosity and higher inbreeding coefficients compared to mixed-breed dogs. Our findings demonstrate that ulcWGS can provide reliable and economical estimations of inbreeding, expanding accessibility to genetic monitoring.

In wildlife forensic practice, species identification and estimation of the Minimum Number of Individuals (MNI) for highly processed specimens have long relied on weight-based conversion methods, which may result in underestimation of the number of individuals involved in a case. Focusing on confiscated casque products of the helmeted hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil), this study combines macroscopic morphological examination with mitochondrial DNA barcoding (16S rRNA, COI, and Cytb) to explore a more robust approach for individual quantification. The results demonstrate that the conventional "weight-based" approach overlooks critical biological information contained in anatomical structures and cannot accurately reflect the actual number of individuals involved. Based on this, we propose an anatomy-based criterion centered on the principle of structural uniqueness: specimens retaining biologically unique beak or casque structures should be directly assigned to a single individual, whereas weight-based estimation should only be applied when original anatomical features are entirely absent. In addition, considering material loss during processing, we propose approximately 85 g as a reference threshold for estimating the number of individuals in heavily processed solid casque products. This approach improves the scientific rigor and accuracy of forensic identification and provides reliable technical support for the conviction, sentencing, and law enforcement of wildlife trafficking cases involving helmeted hornbill and other endangered species.

Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7 (EHEC) is an important zoonotic pathogen that disrupts intestinal epithelial barrier integrity and induces excessive inflammatory responses, thereby leading to impaired growth performance and intestinal injury. EHEC is also an important cause Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) in children and older adults. In pig production, chitosan is considered a promising alternative to antibiotics due to its bioadhesive and antimicrobial properties, but the effects and underlying mechanisms of chitosan (COS) under pathogenic challenge remain to be elucidated. One hundred and eight pigs were randomly divided into three treatments: an unchallenged control group (CON), an EHEC-challenged control group (ECON), and an EHEC-challenged group supplemented with 100 mg/kg COS (ECOS). Results show that EHEC challenge increased the feed conversion ratio (FCR), increased inflammatory cytokine levels, disrupted intestinal morphology, and downregulated tight junction and nutrient transporter gene expression (P<0.05). Dietary COS supplementation significantly improved average daily gain (ADG) and FCR during day 6-14 (P<0.05). Moreover, COS reduced fecal shedding of total E. coli (P = 0.085) and EHEC, attenuated systemic inflammation by decreasing serum TNF- and IL-6 levels, and enhanced humoral immunity as indicated by increased IgA and IgM concentrations (P<0.05). Importantly, COS alleviated EHEC-induced intestinal injury by restoring villus height and villus-to-crypt ratio, with enhanced mucosal digestive enzyme activities, and upregulated expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1 and occludin) and nutrient transporters (SGLT-1 and PEPT1) (P<0.05). In conclusion, these findings indicate that dietary COS improves growth performance in EHEC-challenged weaned pigs, with enhanced intestinal barrier integrity and nutrient transport capacity.

Vessel-whale collisions are a growing global concern and remain challenging to quantify. Therefore, the use of proxies, such as Close Encounters (CEs) that comprise Surprise Encounters (SEs) and Near-Miss Events (NMEs), has been proposed and widely employed to assess collision risk. To better understand this risk in the Eastern North Atlantic, where maritime traffic is intensive, this study aimed to redefine and quantify CEs, and to assess detectability-related variables that may affect CE identification. CEs were assessed using a cetacean occurrence dataset collected between 2012 and 2024 on board cargo ships and oceanographic vessels. CEs thresholds were redefined based on Time to Potential Collision (TPC), rather than distance alone (as described in literature), to allow a more dynamic, risk-based, and speed-sensitive approach. In total, 1226 sightings of whales (baleen, sperm, and beaked whales) were recorded, of which 37.4% were classified as SEs and 2.0% as NMEs. The sperm whale, Physeter macrocephalus, was the species most frequently involved in CEs (13.9% of all CEs), followed by the Cuviers beaked whale, Ziphius cavirostris (11.8%). A Generalized Additive Model was used to assess the influence of detectability-related variables (i.e., meteorological conditions, whale taxa, vessel characteristics, and Marine Mammals Observers (MMOs) experience) on TPC. Significantly lower TPC values were observed with beaked whales, cargo ships, poor visibility conditions, and less experienced MMOs. The results of this study provide an CEs assessment in this region and contribute to the ongoing efforts to standardize CE quantification, by using TPC as a metric. This work also highlights the importance of decreased speeds and the presence of experienced MMOs on board to increase detection probability and TPC, thereby potentially minimizing collision risk.

The use of domestic pigs in clinical training and biomedical research is expanding rapidly, increasing the need for reliable, noninvasive indicators of health and welfare. Vocal analysis offers a non-invasive promising tool, yet the acoustic repertoire of adult domestic pigs remains poorly defined. However, the vocalization repertoire of adult domestic pigs has yet to be characterized. This study characterizes the vocal repertoire of adult pigs housed in a biomedical research laboratory. Twelve mixed-breed pigs (2-3 months old; 5 males, 7 females) were recorded during routine husbandry and experimental procedures. Vocal classification was conducted using perceptual and objective clustering techniques. First, aural- visual (AV) inspection of spectrograms was used to construct a hierarchical repertoire. Second, a two-step cluster analysis based on six acoustic parameters (5% frequency, first quartile frequency, center frequency, 90% bandwidth, interquartile range bandwidth, and 90% duration) provided an objective classification. Agreement between methods was evaluated using Cramers V. A total of 1,136 vocalizations from 69 recordings were analyzed. AV classification revealed five major vocal classes-- grunt, squeal, complex, scream, and bark--subdividing into 16 distinct call types. Standardized definitions integrating descriptive and quantitative criteria are provided. The two-step cluster analysis identified two clusters as the optimal statistical solution, with moderate agreement between methods (Cramers V = 0.67, p < 0.0001). Most AV-defined call types aligned with previously reported repertoires, although whines, yelps, and stable screams were unique to this study. While two-cluster solutions are commonly reported, our findings indicate that richer acoustic structure exists and that high gradation among pig calls may limit the resolution of statistical clustering. These results establish a detailed acoustic framework for adult pig vocalizations and provide essential groundwork for developing predictive models to enhance welfare assessment and support comparative research in laboratory-housed pigs.

Primarily inhabiting the harsh, high-altitude environment of the Qiangtang National Nature Reserve exceeding 5,000 meters above the sea (m.a.s.l.), the golden wild yak is critically endangered, with fewer than 300 individuals remaining in the world, a situation exacerbated by the significant challenges of conducting research and conservation of their genetic resources. Somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) can be an effective method for their preservation, but facing several obstacles in this context, including the hypoxic stress at high altitude that impairs embryonic development due to in vitro manipulation, and constraints of long-distance embryo transport. In the present study, the ear tissue was collected from a childhood male golden wild yak at Xizang Geye Wildlife Rescue Station (4800 m.a.s.l.) and send to Institute of Animal Science at Beijing to derive fibroblast cells. Using fibroblast cells of the golden wild yak as nuclear donors, and bovine oocytes from a local slaughterhouse at Beijing as recipients, the interspecific SCNT (iSCNT) embryos were generated and in vitro developed to blastocysts. To maintain the embryonic viability after long-distance transportation from Beijing to Xizang, iSCNT blastocysts were subjected to cryopreservation by vitrification method. Thawing of vitrified iSCNT blastocysts were completed at Xizang Dangxiong Yak Breeding Innovation Base (4200 m.a.s.l.), and transferred into the uterine horn of domestic yaks. 257 days after blastocyst transfer, a cloned golden wild yak was successfully harvested on January 10, 2026. This work demonstrates, for the first time, that interspecies somatic cell nuclear transfer can successfully produce a cloned offspring under extreme conditions, spanning 4800 m.a.s.l. donor origin, long-distance vitrified embryo transportation, and high-altitude blastocyst transfer at 4200 m.a.s.l., establishing a viable strategy for conserving critically endangered high-altitude species.

IntroductionAntimicrobial Resistance (AMR) presents a critical public health challenge, particularly in smallholder broiler farming, where antibiotics are often used preventively in the absence of effective biosecurity measures. ObjectiveThis study investigates the adoption of biosecurity practices as a sustainable alternative to antibiotics through Participatory Systems Mapping and Experimental Games. MethodsA participatory mixed-methods study was conducted in southern Bangladesh (September 2024-June 2025). Causal Loop Diagrams (CLDs) were co-created with farmers, dealers, and veterinary officers. Ten broiler farmers from single village were selected via purposive and snowball sampling. Experimental games simulated four production cycles where farmers chose Option A (biosecurity, adopters) or Option B (antibiotics, non-adopters) after several interactive trainings. Key metrics including biosecurity compliance (0-12 scale), mortality, FCR, antibiotic use, outbreak history, and economic outcomes were recorded. ResultsCLD analysis revealed a reinforcing loop of increased antibiotic reliance driven by fear of mortality, and balancing loops involving training, biosecurity practices, and consumer incentives to reduce use. Five farmers chose Option A, and both groups remained stable until Round 4. Adopters had flock sizes of 800-2000 birds (non-adopters, 600-1000; mean for both = 1000), were younger, and more educated compared to non-adopters. At baseline, both groups had similar biosecurity scores (0). Adopters had higher mean outbreaks (2 vs. 1.4), mortality (5.6 vs. 4.2), antibiotic use (3.6 vs. 3), and FCR (1.8 vs. 1.6) compared to non-adopters. By Round 4, adopters improved biosecurity scores by 125%, eliminated outbreaks, reduced mortality by 52.6%, stopped antibiotic use, improved FCR by 13.3%, and gained 71.72% profit per bird compared to non-adopters. Non-adopters, influenced by adopters, increased biosecurity scores by 25%, reducing outbreaks, mortality, antibiotic use, and FCR. Adopters also increased direct sales to consumers, yielding a 10%-16% profit gain per bird each round. ConclusionThis study highlights the successful adoption of biosecurity practices by farmers, replacing antibiotics and improving production outcomes. Farmer-driven adoption of these practices fosters long-term sustainability and supports a healthier planet within the One Health framework.

Natural extracts could improve sperm storage and artificial insemination (AI). This study, for the first time, evaluates the suitability of a blueberry extract (Vaccinium corymbosum) obtained from pomace using a sustainable methodology as a supplement for bull semen extenders. Cryopreserved semen doses from eight bulls were combined in 9 pools (3 bulls/pool), supplemented with 0%, 1%, 5%, or 10% extract, and incubated up to 5 h at 38 {degrees}C. Motility was assessed hourly using OpenCASA, and the effects of treatment and time were evaluated using linear mixed-effects models. Motility was significantly better preserved with 1% extract (total and progressive motility, improved linear velocity and linearities, and decreased BCF and fractal dimension, related to hyperactivation). The effect of 5% was overall positive, but it was below 1%, whereas 10% mostly showed a negative effect. These results show that this natural extract could safely supplement bull semen extenders at least between 1% to 5%, and even help improve sperm motility. Therefore, this extract offers an opportunity to enhance cattle semen extenders using a sustainable approach, potentially improving reproductive outcomes.

Marine biodiversity documentation from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) remains neglected despite the region having diversity of marine coastal habitats. The regions intertidal is one such habitat where species documentation remained heavily deficient due to lack of assessments and general apathy towards the habitat. This study addresses the issue of data deficiency of one of the largest taxa, Gastropoda through a decade long citizen science project, Marine Life of Mumbai. There exist large gaps in taxonomic research that have led to inconsistencies in species identification and inadequate ecosystem representation. This study addresses these issues by focusing on one of the largest taxa, the Molluscan class Gastropoda within the MMR. We present the spatial distribution of gastropod assemblages from 28 rocky, sandy and muddy intertidal sites within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, on west coast of India. A total of 163 species were recorded from 2164 observations of marine gastropods. Among these, 29 species, 34 genera and one family Limapontiidae are new records for the region. Additionally, this study reports rediscoveries of 7 species from their type locality, with 5 species of Heterobranchs recorded after 78 years: one species from Neogastropoda, Lataxiena bombayana, after 131 years and one from Siphonariida, Siphonaria bassiensis after 31 years, from their type locality. These species are herein illustrated with detailed morphological descriptions and their local distribution on 28 sites in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Through this study we elucidate that the citizen science efforts and the subsequent taxonomic analysis provide an effective and low-cost method for filling data gaps from large, understudied geographical areas.

The early evolutionary history of modern domestic horses (Equus caballus/E. ferus caballus), known as the DOM2 lineage, is well documented due to numerous archaeological and ancient DNA (aDNA) studies. Although many uncertainties remain in the domestication timeline, current evidence suggests that the domestication of modern horses began in the Pontic-Caspian steppe at least [~]2700 BCE (before common era), or even earlier. However, it is not known how long remnant wild horse populations survived or when domestic horses were introduced into Northern Europe. In this study, we review the current knowledge of horse domestication, focusing on Northern Europe. We analysed prehistoric horses from western Russia to assess the body sizes of wild horses from the Ivanovskaya site (5900-3800 BCE) in the Pontic-Caspian steppe, and the body weight of one Lithuanian wild horse (4000-3800 BCE). Additionally, we analysed body sizes of Late Bronze Age-Early Roman Age horses (1100 BCE-300 CE; common era) and re-analysed body sizes and estimated rider weights of historic domestic horses from Lithuania (100-1400 CE). We searched for pathological changes and signs of bit wear indicative of bridling. Furthermore, we investigated maternal genetic diversity by sequencing ancient mitochondrial DNA. We found that wild horses from Ivanovskaya were intermediate in body size between earlier and more recent horses of the Eurasian Steppe, and that the Lithuanian wild horse weighed only [~]270 kg and Late Bronze Age-Early Roman Age horses 200-300 kg. Lithuanian domestic horses were pony-sized (< 130 cm on average). Bit wear was confirmed on one tooth, the oldest domestic horse in Lithuania (799-570 cal BCE). Another tooth showed signs of the Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH) condition. Mitochondrial DNA was successfully amplified from one Ivanovskaya wild horse along with 25 other ancient samples, including Lithuanias oldest domestic horse. mtDNA diversity was high, revealing several maternal lineages.

Traditionally, primates have been considered primarily visual animals. However, studies across a variety of taxa suggest that, in the context of food evaluation, the reliance on this sense might be more nuanced that previously thought, with dietary specialization and food item properties leading to differences in sensory prioritization. We performed a field-based study assessing the use of sensory cues during food evaluation as well as food-related behaviours such as muzzle contact in two mixed-sex groups of wild vervet monkeys including three age classes over a period of five months (nmonkeys = 44). Using a total of 18868 food evaluation observations collected over 44 hours of focal follows, we found that vervets mainly relied on their sense of vision when evaluating food (96.8% of all instances). Sensory usage varied according to food category and sex differences were only observed in the use of smell for a subset of these. Juveniles initiated muzzle contact and used tactile inspection more often than adults whereas females received muzzle contact more often than males. In addition, the low rejection rates suggest that most food items were familiar to the vervets regardless of age and sex. These findings are in line with optimal foraging theory according to which the food evaluation process should be adapted to the familiarity of food items and allows individuals to maximize their intake of energy and critical nutrients, while minimizing the time and effort in food evaluation.

This study was aimed at characterizing the physicochemical analysis of stingless bees honey (SBH) in the Wonchi district, Southwest Shewa Zone, Ethiopia. In this study, a total of 30 stingless bees honey samples were collected from Damu Dagele, Fite Wato, and Warabu Messe sites from underground soils through an excavation of natural nests. Physicochemical characterization of properties and proximate analysis of the honey were performed. The result showed a total mean of 20.12{+/-}1.14% moisture content, 8.62{+/-}2.73 meq./kg free acidity, 1.8{+/-}0.52 mS/cm electrical conductivity, 3.39{+/-}0.32 pH, 40.52{+/-}6.61 mg/kg HMF, 0.83{+/-}0.33% ash, 0.56{+/-}0.25% protein, 0.56{+/-}0.24% fat, and 0.59{+/-}0.23% WISC for physicochemical properties of stingless bees honey. Among sugar profiles of SBH, fructose constituted the highest proportion at 18.87 g per 100 g (53.87%), while sucrose exhibited the lowest concentration at 5 g per 100 g (14.33%). The result showed that the highest constituted mean of mineral composition was observed with potassium (K) of 16.64{+/-}0.257 mg/kg, while magnesium (Mg) showed the lowest concentration of 3.48{+/-}0.17 mg/kg. A substantial correlation was observed between K and Mg, with a correlation coefficient of 0.72 and 0.72, and similarly between K and Calcium (Ca); the correlation was highly significant, exhibiting a correlation coefficient of 0.65. Furthermore, the correlation between fatty and other physicochemical and proximate analyses showed very insignificant correlations. In general, this study showed that the SBH produced in the current study area has good physicochemical properties and moisture and contains high-quality honey, which may help its traditional medicinal uses. The findings of the study further suggests the potentiality of the area for quality honey, and to easily locate priority areas for stingless bee conservation, further detailed studies of other stingless species honey medicinal values are recommended.

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is key for genetic improvement programs in bovine. However, embryos produced through IVF have lower developmental competence than those produced under in vivo conditions. Conventional sperm preparation for IVF typically relies on heparin for sperm capacitation but fails to replicate the finely tuned molecular environment of the oviduct, resulting in compromised embryonic competence. Here, we evaluated the effect of HyperBull, a novel capacitation technology, on bovine IVF outcomes using unsorted cryopreserved semen. In a split-sample design, 528 cumulus-oocyte complexes were co-incubated with either control or HyperBull capacitated spermatozoa from the same bull. While overall blastocyst rates were not significantly different between groups (34.21% HyperBull vs. 28.63% control, p=0.148), the proportion of hatched embryos was significantly higher in the HyperBull group (15.82% vs. 9.13%, p=0.016). These findings suggest that modulating capacitation signals prior to insemination enhances embryonic developmental competence, thereby improving readiness for implantation. HyperBull may thus represent a valuable tool to increase the efficiency of IVF programs.

We assessed whether pigs provide consolation, referring to targeted affiliation that attenuates a partners stress, under experimental conditions that manipulated exposure to stressed partners. Using a within-subject design, 74 pigs were tested in three contexts: a helping task in which group members could observe and help a trapped focal pig to return to the group, a direct-reunion, in which group members were naive to the experience of a separated focal pig until reunion, and an undisturbed control. We measured affiliative and non-affiliative interactions, anxiety behaviours and changes in salivary cortisol. Only the helping context satisfied most consolation criteria: there were selective increases in unidirectional affiliative contacts from the observer to the focal pig, non-affiliative interactions remained at baseline, and focal pigs showed fewer anxiety behaviours. In contrast, direct-reunions triggered increases in affiliative and non-affiliative interactions and higher anxiety. Cortisol increased during both direct-reunions and helping, but its level was not linked to affiliation. Results add to growing evidence for consolation behaviour in pigs and suggest best practices for reintegrating pigs into groups. Graded reintroductions that allow observers to assess the emotional state of targets may promote social buffering, whereas abrupt regrouping may trigger more generalized arousal or personal distress.

The north coast of mainland Portugal supports a strong dolphin presence and extensive fishing activity, increasing the likelihood of interactions, such as bycatch. This study provides an initial assessment of potential conflict areas, using automatic identification system (AIS) data from Global Fishing Watch. To this end, sighting data from the ATLANTIDA project (2021-2024) on the common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) were used to describe spatiotemporal patterns of occurrence and encounter rates, and to predict their association with fishing effort to identify and map areas of potential overlap. A generalised additive model (GAM) was then applied, integrating environmental, spatial, temporal, and fisheries-related variables to identify the main predictors of species occurrence. Common dolphins were frequently observed during the summer, with an average encounter rate of 3.662 sightings/km. This high encounter rate may be associated with factors such as sea surface temperature, diet, and purse seine fishing activity. The maps showed a spatial overlap between fishing grounds and areas of common dolphin occurrence. Fishing effort was nearly identical between locations with sightings (2.00 h/km{superscript 2}) and those without (1.62 h/km{superscript 2}), suggesting that dolphins are not actively avoiding fishing areas but may instead frequent them due to shared habitat preferences. The best-fitted GAM indicated that encounters were related to year, latitude, fishing effort, depth, sea surface temperature, and season. There was an increase in occurrence over the years and a decrease with increasing fishing effort and sea surface temperature, possibly linked to changes in prey availability, although broad confidence intervals warrant cautious interpretation. Despite some limitations encountered in this study, we believe our findings provide valuable insights into the relationship between dolphin occurrence, environmental conditions, and fishing activities in the area, establishing an important baseline for future conservation and fisheries management efforts.

Stem cell technologies have become a vital component of conservation efforts around the globe. Biobanks and pluripotent stem cell lines help to ensure species and their genetic diversity are preserved. These efforts have however, focussed mostly on mammals and birds, and the cryopreservation protocols for embryos and cells were developed decades ago laying the basis for artificial reproductive techniques for species conservation. With over 20% of non-avian reptile species facing extinction, it is imperative to establish protocols for reptiles to ensure species preservation and also to facilitate the establishment of new reptile model organisms to match the standard of mammals. Here, we have generated a cryopreservation method for preserving early gastrulating veiled chameleon embryos as a representative squamate species. To this end, we first developed a tissue culture method for maintaining cells extracted from peri-gastrulation chameleon embryos and then tested different cryopreservation methods altering the concentration of the penetrating cryoprotectant DMSO and assessing the effect of the addition of non-penetrating cryoprotectants Trehalose and Sucrose. We then optimised a protocol for whole embryo vitrification in 20% DMSO with added Trehalose or Sucrose that can easily be adapted for fieldwork. Taken together, our method not only provides a protocol for conservation efforts but also lays the basis for mechanistic studies of early squamate embryo development by enabling cryopreservation of whole embryos in a fieldwork setting, which facilitates their live transport back to a laboratory for functional experiments or molecular analyses.
