Tobacco smoking and vaping in pregnancy and neonatal outcomes: results from a UK cohort study

Although smoking harms during pregnancy are well established, there is less evidence on impacts of vaping. We used the UK Early Life Cohort Feasibility Study on 1,696 singleton births in 2022/23 to examine associations of smoking and vaping in pregnancy with birth outcomes. Analyses found that smoking during pregnancy was associated with reduced birthweight (-0.28kg, p<0.001) as was dual use (-0.30, p=0.008). There were no impacts of vaping alone on birthweight. Results underline the importance of quitting smoking during pregnancy and highlight that pregnant women should be advised to quit vaping, but not at the expense of reverting to smoking.
