Partial genome characterization of a novel potentially zoonotic parapoxvirus in a horse, Finland

We report a sequencing protocol and 121 kb poxvirus sequence from a clinical sample of a horse with dermatitis. Based on phylogenetic analyses, the virus is a novel parapoxvirus. We show association with recent epidemic, and previous data suggest zoonotic potential. Further characterization and development of diagnostic protocols are necessary.
