Disease heterogeneity presents a major challenge for genetic and epigenetic dissection of complex traits. Neuropsychiatric traits, such as opioid use disorder (OUD), arise from diverse genetic and environmental factors that uniquely combine in individuals, complicating efforts to identify causal genes and enhancers.
