A recombinant norrin-derived growth factor retains the complete multifunctionality of human norrin

Current therapies for ischemic retinopathies address the disrupted vasculature however they do not regrow patent vessels or directly benefit the neural retina. VEGF blocking therapies temporarily reduce the retinal edema but do not counter end-stage fibrosis that can lead to vision threatening consequences such as retinal detachment. Norrin is a multifunctional growth factor that is essential for neurosensory development in the eye and ear. We developed a norrin mimetic, Noregen, to overcome the deficits of currently available therapies for retinal ischemic retinopathies. Here we show that Noregen is as good or better than norrin at shoring up the retinal vascular barrier, growing patent vessels, activating neurogenic pathways and inhibiting fibrotic pathways.
