Early flow cytometry studies revealed T cell activation in major depressive disorder (MDD) (Maes et al., 1990-1993). MDD is characterised by activation of the immune-inflammatory response system (IRS) and the compensatory immunoregulatory system (CIRS), including deficits in T regulatory (Treg) cells.
