Discovery of the spectacular Dueling Dinosaurs and other significant dinosaur localities from remote and isolated exposures of the Hell Creek Formation in central Montana highlight the complexity of establishing stratigraphic context and correlating Hell Creek Formation fossil localities located outside of the type area. This is particularly problematic for the lower two-thirds of the formation, which generally lacks reliable biostratigraphic or magnetostratigraphic zonation and has no dated ash beds. To address these enduring issues for one of the most significant Upper Cretaceous terrestrial fossil-bearing units in North America, detailed stratigraphic sections were established on the Murray Ranch and on McGinnis Butte in central Montana and correlated with other published Hell Creek Formation localities via magnetostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, and radioisotopic dating of ash beds. Results indicate that the K-Pg boundary is not exposed in the study area, however high-precision U-Pb CA-TIMS zircon ages for two newly discovered ash beds (66.929 {+/-} 0.020 Ma and 66.850 {+/-} 0.026 Ma, 2{sigma} internal uncertainties) bracketing the Dueling Dinosaurs locality provide the first absolute ages for the lower portion of the Hell Creek Formation, anywhere. Bayesian age-stratigraphic modelling places the Dueling Dinosaurs locality at 66.897 +0.023/-0.028 Ma and suggest that the age of the base of the formation is [~]67.102 +0.710/-0.173 Ma (or older) in the study area. Comparison of stratigraphic architecture within the study area with published sections in the type area suggests that named sandstone marker horizons used for lithostratigraphic and sequence stratigraphic correlation in the type area have limited utility for regional correlation and need to be used with caution.

Habitat restoration efforts should integrate past trends, current status, expected climate change and coastal development impacts, remaining realistic opportunities, and resource management community capabilities. Integrating these concepts, a new target setting approach is being implemented in the Tampa Bay region with broad transferability potential. Past changes, as determined through a three-decade habitat change analysis and over forty years of habitat restoration experience in the region, has informed the new approach. It is also primarily focused on what is possible today and the projected needs for the future, rather than focusing on or attempting to replicate past ecological conditions. Likewise, this new paradigm accounts for persistent local and global stressors - especially watershed development, sea level rise, and climate change. As such, newly established numeric targets are "place-based," meaning that they attempt to maximize the remaining restoration and conservation "opportunity areas" within the watershed. Lastly, the approach is comprehensive in that targets for the range of critical habitats, from subtidal to uplands, are now defined. This approach represents a general framework for addressing competing interests in planning for habitat restoration that could be applied in other coastal settings where sustainable urbanization practices are desired to co-exist with natural environments.

Arabuko Sokoke Forest (ASF) is the largest area of coastal forest remaining in East Africa and a major Important Bird Area in mainland Kenya. The study analysed data from point count surveys over 15 months in three land use types; primary forest (PF), plantation forest (PL), and farmlands (FM), and compared these to the first comprehensive bird checklist for the forest, as well as recent surveys from other studies. Avifaunal diversity and abundance were compared using multivariate analysis to determine bird responses to different land use characteristics. The primary forest held a distinctive bird community, while the bird communities of farmlands and plantation forest were more similar to each other. Land use had a significant effect on overall avian diversity and abundance. The current forest avifauna was divided into forest specialists (16 species), forest generalists (26 species) and forest visitors (30 species). Seven species of forest specialist and generalists recorded prior to 1980 may no longer occur in the forest. Of 38 specialists and generalists recorded in our point counts, 19 were also recorded on farmland and 28 in plantations. One forest specialist, the Green Barbet, was most encountered outside the forest. Future research should focus on habitat use by these bird species, and the extent of movement by forest birds between the remaining patches of coastal forest. Patterns of habitat use by birds in the area suggest that vegetation heterogeneity and habitat complexity are especially significant in sustaining diverse and abundant bird populations. The management of plantations and farmland will be critical for the conservation of forest generalists and forest visitors.

Many governmental and non-governmental organizations are planting trees, often in developing countries where costs are lower, to offset carbon emissions in industrial countries and slow global warming. These efforts often fail to achieve carbon sequestration goals, frequently related to the selection of unsuitable planting sites, use of tree species with inadequate biomass or vulnerability to wildfire. Reforestation of the worlds tallest trees, which attain heights above 80 m and standing biomasses orders of magnitude greater than other trees, could optimize removal of atmospheric carbon. Wildfires have consumed almost 30% of Californias forests since 2000. To optimize carbon sequestration by tree planting in Santa Clara County, California, we selected coast redwoods, a tree species that is highly resilient to fire, rapidly accumulates the largest biomass of any tree in the world, has exceptional longevity, and is historically native to the westernmost portion of the county, where they support a unique ecosystem. Because historical redwoods range maps are conflicting, and because global warming may change the range of suitable habitat, we developed a machine learning model to determine optimal habitat available for reforestation. The optimal habitat identified included the current and known historical coast redwood forest and excluded lands with no historical records of redwoods, validating model accuracy. The opportunity to capture and store atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) is significant, as the model found 33,969 ha (131 mi2) of optimal redwood habitat, of which nearly 77% [26,051 ha (101 mi2)] currently has no conifer cover. Restoring the historical coast redwood forest in this single county alone could sequester 2.3% of the entire State of Californias 2020 carbon emissions. Similar studies should be conducted in ocean-adjacent counties which likely have order of magnitude greater optimal coast redwood planting areas than inland Santa Clara County, with correspondingly greater potential carbon sequestration impacts.

When they are occasionally found in Middle Palaeolithic Neanderthal settlements, lithic weapons heads are large and do not differ in size, shaping or type from those used for activities other than hunting, such as plant gathering or butchery. The presence in a same assemblage of various types of armatures, some of which are microlithic and designed for this purpose, has only been documented in Modern Humans sites. Recent studies show that light projectile points, which were to become the structuring element of Upper Palaeolithic lithic industries, were already present in its formative stages. However, they remain marginal in debates regarding the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition. We present here the first results of a search for weapon heads in the oldest layers of the Obi-Rakhmat rock shelter, at around 80 ka. This site, located in the western foothills of the Tian Shan Mountains, northeastern Uzbekistan, has yielded a blade-based lithic industry which is forming part of the continuity of the Levantine Early Middle Paleolithic but with several innovative traits. The assemblage is based on a systematic blade production (regular thick narrow blades from unipolar and bipolar sub-prismatic and narrow-faced cores, thin and wide blades from flat-faced Levallois-like cores) along with shorter pieces from convergent or centripetal Levallois cores, and bladelets from burin-cores and other small cores. Three types of projectile armature are identified from their impact marks: retouched points, bladelets and raw micropoints which were so far unseen due to their fragmentary state. The micropoints are too narrow for having been fitted to anything other than arrow shafts. They are similar to the armatures described in a pioneer settlement by Sapiens in the Rhone Valley, France, 25,000 years later.

Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) social structure is more complex than previously thought. Because of the fluid "fission-fusion" nature of their relationships: individuals foraging, traveling, and socializing with a number of animals, where associations form and are broken numerous times, little has been confirmed about their long-term associations. Humpback whales of the North Pacific Ocean migrate annually between tropical breeding areas to northern latitudes where they congregate and feed. The purpose of this study was to explore the social and feeding habits of the summer population of humpback whales returning to Prince William Sound (PWS) in the south central coast of Alaska. Fluke photographs of pigmentation patterns were used to document individual whales between the years 1983 and 2009 to determine, population characteristics, reproductive rates, long-term associations, feeding habits and spatial partitioning. During the 27 year study period there were 3,017 encounters with 405 unique whales. Forty of these whales (9.88%) had long sighting histories, showing strong site fidelity. Association indices for all pairs of whales were calculated. Long-lasting associations were found between thirty-two of the forty whales. Two distinct groups were determined by the highest association coefficients. Although the overall ranges of the two groups overlapped, they did not often mingle and offspring did not join their maternal group. All but two females had enduring bonds with at least one male. Associate males were sometimes found at a distance from others of their "clan" and would rejoin periodically. Two whales from one of these clans were found together in Hawaiian waters, a male escorting a female with a newborn calf, suggesting these long lasting associations endure through migration and into the southern breeding areas. Optimal observation conditions of a small population of humpback whales in sheltered waters allowed the discovery of two social groups enduring almost three decades.

Research on ferns ecology has gained attention in the last decade, yet there is paucity of information on the intercontinental comparison of ferns community across two continents. This study focused on comparing the ferns community assemblages in tropical forests of Malaysia and Nigeria, thereby assessing the patterns of the species richness and diversity across the two continents. The diversity and taxonomic compositions of ferns were assessed using 180 plots of size 10 m x 10 m in each country. The species richness and other diversity indices were determined using the combined forests data for each country and for the individual forests. The observed and rarefied-extrapolated fern species richness are significantly higher in Malaysian forests than Nigerian forests. Also, the other diversity indices (Simpson index, Margalef index, and Fishers alpha) are significantly higher in Malaysian forests except Shannon index which showed no significant difference between the two biogeographic regions. There is a very low similarity in the taxonomic composition of ferns between the two biogeographic areas, although the similarity in composition increased with increasing taxonomic levels (genus and family levels). Terrestrial and epiphytic ferns are more dominant than the other life forms in the two countries. Since the two countries receive varying degrees of environmental factors, we then hypothesize that these observed differences are due to climatic differences as well as historical and evolutionary processes.

Biological indicators (bioindicators) can be individual species or species groups used to assess habitat quality. Unfortunately, conservationists often lack information on species distribution, how to differentiate between similar species, and environmental conditions associated with the presence of a species. We addressed these problems using two "sister" species of fish, the Mottled Sculpin (Cottus bairdii) and the Slimy Sculpin (Cottus cognatus), as stream quality indicators in the Manistee River watershed in the Huron-Manistee National Forests in Michigan, USA. We determined the abundance and distribution of these species and related their presence to concurrent in-stream measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, turbidity, and stream quality score based on macroinvertebrate diversity. To be certain of identification, we sequenced the Cytochrome c Oxidase Subunit I (CO1) molecular marker for specimens and used it as a DNA barcode to determine a specimens species. Cladistic analyses of CO1 unambiguously supported recognition of Mottled Sculpin and Slimy Sculpin as distinct species, confirming initial 87.5% correct identification using morphological characteristics, with uncertainty limited to juvenile fish. Field determinations increased to 100% correct identification as investigators gained more experience. Both species were most abundant in headwater regions, decreased downstream, and were sympatric at several locations. Mottled Sculpin were more likely to be found at stream locations with lower conductivity, pH, and stream quality scores, whereas Slimy Sculpin presence was more strongly associated higher levels of DO and lower levels of turbidity. Such findings are important because Mottled Sculpin are a designated management indicator species of the US Forest Service in the Huron-Manistee National Forests, but may be ineffective as a habitat quality indicator when used alone. Concurrent use of Mottled Sculpin and Slimy Sculpin as a management indicator sister-species complex could allow sufficient landscape coverage to permit habitat assessment if species-specific differences in environmental tolerances are precisely determined.

Sakumo Lagoon, a small (1 km2) semi-open coastal lagoon in Ghana, lies between the cities of Accra and Tema. The lagoon and its surrounding wetland were designated a Ramsar Site in 1992, mainly because it served as a refuge for 66 local and migratory bird species. Its ecology, and the biology of its major fish species, notably the blackchin tilapia (Sarotherodon melanotheron) were thoroughly studied in 1971, when the lagoon was a diverse, mainly brackish ecosystem supporting a traditionally and well-managed fishery. In 2016-2017, another study found the lagoon mostly covered by floating vegetation and plastic waste. Finally, in 2024, a visual survey established that the floating vegetation had been almost completely replaced by terrestrial plants, with only a few square meters of garbage-strewn water in front of a culvert connecting the lagoon to the open sea. Several lagoons along the coast of Ghana have been similarly lost to urban sprawl and its various forms of pollution, but Sakumo Lagoon is a Ramsar Site, and its imminent disappearance should not remain undocumented.

Problems of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) that increased and escalated in the last 40 years seem to be related to one or more aggressive biotypes that appeared to spread steadily worldwide. As well, some biological characteristics of B. tabaci have led some entomologists to change and multiply their methodology to update with the change in the pest genetic structures. This study is the 1st of its kind in Qassim region in KSA in respect of B. tabaci biotypes. Four identification methods (Squash Silverleaf Symptoms (SSL), cross mating, Cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences, and ISSR-PCR analysis) were carried out to determine the biotypes of B. tabaci at Qassim regions. Slight SSL symptoms were observed with varying degrees on squash leaves caused by B. tabaci population at Qassim, KSA. Cross-mating among the populations that have the same or similar genetic structures produced fertilized offspring, females and males with higher sex ratios in favor of females, and produced a higher number of eggs. Whereas, B. tabaci populations that varied greatly in their genetic structures produced unfertilized eggs, which produce males only. In the same trend, ISSR-PCR analysis revealed that B. tabaci populations at Qassim regions varied genetically and gathered into four genetic groups. In conclusion, COI analysis is a perfect tool for classification between biotypes in B. tabaci. Therefore, this study declares that B. tabaci that colonized and infest Qassim horticulture has not the same genetic structures but belonging to B biotypes. It could be named as Bemisia species complex.

Damming and diverting river water alters the channel characteristics and natural flow regime. The change in biotic and abiotic factors results in dissimilar habitat conditions upstream and downstream of the barrage. Given the habitat dissimilarity and therefore resource availability, we hypothesized the dissimilarity in waterbird abundance and species diversity in the river habitat upstream and downstream of the barrage. The study was conducted on a 24 km stretch of Ganga River at Narora, Uttar Pradesh, India. This stretch overlaps with a Ramsar site as well as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA). Bird sampling was done using transect count method for summer and winter season in 2017. The abundance was studied in relation to three habitat variables viz. channel depth, channel width and anthropogenic disturbances using Generalized Linear Model. A total of 140 species of birds were recorded. There was statistically significant difference in the abundance of waterbirds between upstream and downstream stretch in winter season (Mann-Whitney U, p < 0.05). During winters, migratory waterbirds especially ducks and geese occupied the deep water upstream of barrage, while the downstream was mostly occupied by terns and cormorants. Waterbird species diversity was higher in downstream during winters (Effective Number of Species=28; Shannons Index= 3.35) and higher in upstream during summer (Effective Number of Species=25, Shannons Index=2.87). Channel width, channel depth and anthropogenic disturbance influenced waterbird abundance in both the seasons (Generalized Linear Model; p < 0.05). The influence of channel depth varied with season for the upstream stretch.

Reasons for performing the studyHoof conformation is linked to biomechanics of the hoof and injury occurrence. There is no scientific data if conformation differs between shod and barefoot-managed hooves. ObjectivesTo investigate if and how shod and barefoot hooves differ in conformation. Study designRetrospective cohort study. MethodsStandardised lateral, dorsopalmar/dorsoplantar and solar photographs of 98 shod and 69 barefoot-managed hooves were included. Thirty-six of the barefoot horses were farrier-managed, 33 were podiatrist-managed. Length and angular measurements produced nine conformation parameters; dorsopalmar/plantar balance, solar symmetry, toe angle, heel angle, heel/toe angle difference, heel width, splaying index, flaring index and frog size. ResultsBarefoot hooves showed significantly fewer underrun heels, steeper heel angles, wider heels, increased splaying, increased flaring and larger frog size compared to hooves of shod horses. Solar symmetry showed a significant difference in front hooves but not hind hooves (P=0.038, P=0.104) and toe angle was not significantly different (P=0.368, P=0.425). There was no significant difference in the conformation of barefoot farrier and podiatrist-managed front hooves, however there was a significant difference in the hind hooves: farrier-managed hooves had longer frogs and shorter toes, compared to podiatrist-managed hooves. ConclusionsThe significant differences in hoof conformation found should be considered when managing the individual horse, since hoof conformation affects loading of the internal structure of the hoof and hence influences aetiopathogenesis of hoof pathology.

Taxa of the family Cactaceae presents morphological and reproductive characteristics, which are used by rural communities in arid and semi-arid areas, for food, medicinal and ornamental purposes. The objectives were to identify the most used species and to relate the socioeconomic factors of the informants with their knowledge of the species. To this end, 262 semi-structured interviews were applied, with questions such as name, age, gender, educational level, source of employment, among others; eight categories of use were established: agro-ecological, agricultural, commercial, environmental service, food, medicinal, ornamental and technological; three indexes were calculated, relative importance, the value of use for each of the species and wealth of knowledge of the interviewees. Nine species are reported, from which eight are used as food and ornamental, standing out Opuntia ficus-indica for its diversity of uses, while Cylindropuntia tunicata does not report any utility. Variables such as age and residence time showed a significant relationship with the number of plants used by the interviewees. It is expected to contribute to the preservation of cacti, local knowledge and encourage large-scale cultivation since species such as Mammillaria columbiana, Melocactus andinus, and Melocactus curvispinus are being used in an unsustainable way, which could cause their local extinction.

Tropical regions are subjected to rapid land use changes altering species composition and diversity in communities. The non-Apis bees are vital invertebrates continued to be highly neglected in the tropics. We compared their diversity status, richness and composition across natural areas and agroecosystems in Doon valley, a subtropical-temperate landscape situated at the foothills of outer Himalayas in India. We investigated how two major habitats relate to non-Apis bee diversity, specifically seeking answers to (1) Whether natural habitat is a refuge to richer and rarer bee communities than agroecosystems? (2) Are natural habitats important for supporting wild bee populations in agroecosystems? (3) Do polyculture farms behave similar to natural habitats and therefore support richer bee communities than monoculture? Observation and pantrap sampling were used to collect data. We recorded 43 species belonging to bees of five families. The findings of our investigation demonstrate the importance of natural habitats as a potential refuge for non-Apis bees. The findings highlighted that Doon valley harboured twenty-five rare species of non-Apis bees, and natural habitats are a refuge to 11 rare specialist species (clamtest; Specialization threshold K = 2/3, Alpha level = 0.005). Natural habitat diversity in Doon valley supports bee communities in nearby agroecosystems (R2 = 0.782, SE = 0.148, P = 0.004). Polyculture practices in agroecosystems (<100m from forest H = 2.15; >100m from forest = 2.08) in the valley mimic natural habitats (H = 2.37) and support diverse non-Apis bee communities (2.08) in comparison to monocultures (<100m from forest H = 2.13; >100m from forest =1.56). Bees evolved with flowering plants over 120 million years and they suffice an ever-growing anthropogenic nutrition needs with their services through enhanced agricultural production in pursuit of forage. We finally recommend similar assessments of bee diversity and plants they support in different habitats and vice versa.

Catadromous eels are found in more habitats than any other fish and are capable of inhabiting marine, brackish and freshwater environments. In this study we used the American Eel (Anguilla rostrata) as a bioindicator organism to create a novel method of using spatial analysis to study species conservation over landscape scales. We built a model of the subwatersheds of the Chesapeake Bay using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and overlaid eel density data (> 1 million eels sampled), dam density data and land use in ArcGIS. Dam construction in the study area peaked between 1955 and 1975, possibly as a result of flood control measures. Effects of land use were localized and most pronounced in areas around Baltimore, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, USA. Results indicate the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers appear to be areas of lesser concern while the upper James and York rivers are ideal for follow-up studies, since these area rank poorly in both eel density and barriers to fish passage. Because these rivers have high eel density downstream, the dams appear to be the limiting factor. Sampling methods have been inconsistent over time, making it is difficult to determine where eel densities are low vs. the area having had little sampling effort. This is partially resolved with catch per sampling event (CPSE), which appears to show a relationship between eels sampled and the number caught per sample. Potential strategies for improving watersheds include dam removal, fish passage and habitat restoration.

Most modern birds have scales covering the foot and feathers elsewhere. Discoveries of fossil feathers attached to the metatarsus in non-avian dinosaurs and basal birds suggests that the avian scales are secondarily derived from feathers. However, our knowledge of early avian scales and their taphonomy is still limited, due to the scarcity of fossil record. Here we employ multiple techniques to characterize the morphological and chemical details preserved and investigate how they are preserved in the skin of IVPP V15077, a referred specimen of the Early Cretaceous Gansus yumenensis. Results show that two types of scales, scutellate and interstitial scales, are preserved in IVPP V15077, which, in combination with previous discovery of scutate and reticulate scales in other Early Cretaceous birds, indicates that all four types of scales present in modern birds have appeared in the Early Cretaceous. SEM observations and Raman analysis suggest that the skin of Gansus yumenensis may be pigmented. Elemental mapping indicates that aluminosilicates and calcium phosphate are involved in the mineralization of the skin.

In multidisciplinary research interpreting interactions between diverse data sources requires a Complexity approach. A Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) framework allows the relationships of multiple factors to be explored and may provide a more holistic and nuanced understanding. This study is innovative in explaining the potential benefits in a CAS approach to combining bioarchaeological and historical data when examining a rare archaeological skeletal sample of early migrants to South Australia (SA). Macroscopic, radiographic and micro-CT methods were used for the analysis of the skeletal remains of a group of 19th century migrants buried in an unmarked area of St Marys Anglican Church Cemetery. The relevant historical records explored were from British emigrant ships to SA (1836 to 1885) and the Church burial records (1847-1885). Evidence of poor oral and general health was present in the skeletal material. Dental developmental defects indicated earlier health insults. Pathological manifestations in bone were compatible with joint and infectious diseases, and metabolic deficiencies. Historical documents recorded that the voyages to SA were challenging, with some ships experiencing a high death rate. Diseases e.g., measles and scarlet fever, and diarrhoea were frequently recorded as causes of death at sea for both subadults and adults. In the Colony, burial records showed similar causes of death for subadults, but for adults, accidents and tuberculosis were often reported. The CAS approach provided insights beyond those from analysis of the individual sources. It increased understanding of emergent, non-predicted outcomes that resulted from interactions between multiple factors e.g., the impact of fluctuating economy, political instability and ideological pressures, on the health of migrants. The CAS framework is a valuable methodology for interpreting health patterns and can be further developed for a range of historical and contemporary health contexts.

We examined global records of accessible natural history voucher collections (with publicly available data) for terrestrial and freshwater vascular plants, fungi, freshwater fishes, birds, mammals, and herpetofauna (amphibians and reptiles) and highlight areas of the world that would be considered undersampled and sometimes called "unexplored" (i.e., have relatively low, or no evidence of, past sampling efforts) under typical Western-scientific descriptions. We also question what "unexplored" may actually mean in these contexts and explain how retiring the term in favor of more nuanced phrasing can mitigate future misunderstandings of natural history science.

The southern white rhinoceros (SWR) Ceratotherium simum simum, like all extant rhinoceros species, is under global threat of extinction, due to their dwindling wild population numbers in protected areas and state-owned parks as a result of poaching. The Kruger National Park (KNP), the renowned state-owned stronghold for SWR, has suffered an estimated decline of over 75.0% of its population since 2011, with the highest annual poaching rates over the past decade and a remaining population estimated at only 2,607 animals by the end of 2020, which is an average annual population decline of -10.2% from 2008 to 2020, and 2,458 animals left by the end of June 2022. On the contrary, SWR under private custodianship and management on rewilded agro-sustainable biodiversity game ranches in South Africa (estimated currently at >8,000 animals, some of which are registered Captive Breeding Operations [CBO]; assessed CBOs contained 2,882 rhinos at the time of this study (Sep 2021), have increased in population numbers and survival rates, sustaining average annual population growth performances of 9.0%. This increase has been attributed to effective security, provision of additional habitat, dispersal, and frequent genetic exchange of rhinos between breeding subpopulations by the private sector. The conservation success of the private sector has largely been overlooked and disregarded by world conservation bodies and organizations, mostly due to misguided and prejudiced media publicity and the lack of scientific analytical assessment. Private rhino custodians and their biological/ conservation breeding practices, with private agro-sustainable biodiversity wildlife management and/ or captive breeding, generally being perceived and branded as either "canned" or equated to "captive zoological-gardens". Since the commencement of the International Convention on Biodiversity, global controversy exists whereby most of mankind today perceive bio-conservation of a species to be assigned in principle solely to protected areas and state-owned parks. The unique and advantageous roles of rewilded bio-conservation and sustainable-use conservation CBOs, being a key to green-economy and natural capital in a post-Covid-19 struggle, are mostly ignored. This study serves to assess and quantify the impact of private wildlife ranching in South Africa with specific focus on its potential contribution to rhino conservation specifically for that of the SWR C.s. simum. A long-term study was conducted to understand some aspects of breeding biology of Black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis) in Changthang, Ladakh. Data on aspects such as the breeding season, courtship, mating, egg laying and incubation period, nest site fidelity, egg morphometry, breeding productivity and recruitment rate were collected between 2003 and 2012. Black-necked crane started arriving from last week of March to first half of April and showed fidelity at ten nesting sites. Courtship and mating peaked early morning (0700 hours), around noon (1100 hours) and in late evening (0600 hours) while the nest building at evening (1600 hours). The egg laying period initiated in May and extended up to July. The average incubation period was 33.88{+/-}0.3 days. Hatching success, nest survival rate and fledgling increment rate of the bird were 73.3%, 0.55 {+/-} 0.03 and 0.41 {+/-} 0.02 respectively with an overall breeding productivity of 0.73. The present population of Black-necked crane in Changthang, Ladakh seems to stable with an average recruitment rate of 15.7{+/-}1.4.
